People often ask me whether I print my own photos or order them from an online photo studio. And how I get to end up with a white border around my pictures, or with the smaller sized photos that I love to use on my scrapbook pages so often. Since my husband, Sebastiaan, is far more familiar with this kind of things, and I have to admit the printing/ordering often ends up on his to-do list, I asked him to do a guest-post here on my blog about this subject. * Heel vaak vragen mensen me of ik mijn foto’s zelf print of ze bij een online studio bestel. This question seems to come up on a regular basis in my wife’s inbox. Therefore Els asked me if I could do a guest post about how I go about printing the pictures that end up on her layouts. Absolutely, so here it goes.
Concerning the actual printing there are two options. You let a professional service handle it for you, or you do it by yourself. Our decision is usually based on the quantity of prints we need. A couple of times a year we select a bunch of pictures and order the prints at our service of choice. In most cases, the more you order, the cheaper the price per print will be. If we need just one, or a couple of prints, I just print them myself using a regular inkjet printer. Most consumer-printers can print decent quality photos nowadays, so you don’t need a professional, top-of-the-range one.
Now, the next question is how big you want your photo(s) to be. You can stick with standard sizes, or you may want a custom size because that’s what the layout you had in mind needs. In case you order at a printservice, they usually offer a bunch of sizes to choose from. You are limited to that selection however and cannot order a custom size print directly. How to deal with that in case you want a size that they’re not offering? We’ll get to that in a minute.
When I’m printing myself I use two sizes of photo-paper, 4×6 and A4 (close to US-letter). You may have or get more sizes, but that is what we always have at hand. For most of the prints I end up using the 4×6 sized ones. Now, you can print your photo any size you want within the limits of the photopaper you have. If you want to stick to the size of paper you have (e.g. 4×6) you usually can select that specific size in the printing software that comes with your printer. Easy as pie. But if you want a custom size, here’s how I do it.
I use photo-editing software the resize the image to the exact size I want. You can use photoshop, photoshop elements, … or something similar. I use ‘The Gimp’, an open-source and totally free alternative. Whatever software you prefer, the steps will be more or less the same.
- Open your photo in your photo-editor.
- Once opened we need to resize the image to the size we want to print at. In photoshop we go to the image menu and select ‘image size’ (image>image size). In ‘the gimp’ you look for ‘scale image’ in the image menu (image>scale image).
- In the following dialogue you’ll be able to define the size you want. In photoshop we do it in the section that says ‘document size’. There you can define height and/or width (keep them locked together). There is also a third variable, ppi or dpi (dots per inch). In order to achieve a nice and sharp looking print (I presume the photo is sharp to begin with) I advise to set it at 300. In ‘the gimp’ you also find height and width, but the ppi variabel is split in ‘x resolution’ and ‘y resolution’. Also set them at 300 (keep them locked). Both in photoshop or ‘the gimp’ you can select inches, cm, pixels, … as measure of length.
- Select OK and your image gets resized. It may be possible that your image loses a bit of sharpness due to the resizing. I usually do a bit of sharpening afterwards using ‘unsharp mask’. This, however, is not a necessary step.
- Next I open a new document the size of the paper I have (eg 4×6). Therefore I go to File – New, and select the size I need. Again, you can define the size in pixels, inches, … or use one of the templates that are already available. Most standard sizes are predefined.
- Then I copy and paste my resized image in the newly created document. The fastest way is to go to your resized image and press ‘ctrl+a’ followed by’ ctrl+c’. Then go to your newly created, but still empty, document and press ‘ctrl+v’. Your image will be pasted on a new layer, so you can move it around or even rotate it if you need to. Depending how big or small you want the prints you may be able to fit more than one rescaled image on your paper. The result is one or more smaller images on a white background.
- Then save that file as a jpg
You can print this file yourself or you can also send this file to print to a professional print service. Just make sure the endfile has the same size of the paper you’ll print to or the same size as the service offers. After your photo has been printed you can cut away the excess.

Deze vraag lijkt op regelmatige basis op te duiken in de inbox van mijn vrouw, dus vroeg Els me een gastpost te schrijven omtrent het printen van de foto’s die op haar layouts terecht komen. Natuurlijk, hier komt het.
Wat betreft het uiteindelijke printen zijn er twee opties. Je kan een professionele dienst dit voor jou laten doen, of je print gewoon zelf. Onze beslissing is meestal gebaseerd op hoeveel prints er precies moeten zijn. Een aantal keren per jaar selecteren we een groter aantal foto’s en bestellen we deze bij een online dienst. Meestal is het zo dat, hoe meer je besteld, hoe goedkoper de prijs per foto zal worden. Als we slecht één of enkele foto’s nodig hebben, print ik ze zelf met een gewone inkjet printer. Tegenwoordig kunnen de meeste printers wel een degelijk kwaliteit van foto’s printen, dus je heb geen professioneel super-toestel nodig.
Nu is de volgende vraag natuurlijk hoe groot je je foto(‘s) wil (laten) printen. Je kan het bij standaardmaten houden, of je wil misschien een aangepaste maat, omdat de layout die je in gedachten had dat net nodig heeft. In het geval je beroep doet op een printservice, worden er meestal een aantal formaten aangeboden waaruit je kan kiezen. Je bent gebonden aan die maten en kan niet zomaar een ander formaat bestellen. Hoe los je dat nu op wanneer je toch een formaat wil dat niet wordt aangeboden? Daar hebben we het zo meteen nog over.
Als ik zelf foto’s print, gebruik ik twee formaten fotopapier, 10×15 en A4. Je hebt misschien andere maten, of ze zijn misschien wel verkrijgbaar, maar dat is wat we meestal voorhanden hebben. Voor de meeste prints gebruik ik de 10×15. Je kan je foto afdrukken op eender welk formaat binnen de grenzen van je papier natuurlijk. Wanneer je die specifieke maat (vb. 10×15) wil gebruiken, dan kun je die doorgaans gewoon selecteren in je printsoftware, die met je printer is meegeleverd. Als je een aangepast formaat wil, is dit hoe ik het doe.
Ik gebruik een fotobewerkingsprogramma om het formaat van mijn foto aan te passen volgens mijn wens. Je kan Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, .. of iets soortgelijk gebruiken. Zelf gebruik ik ‘The Gimp’, een open-source en volledig gratis alternatief. Welke software je ook verkiest, de stappen zullen min of meer gelijklopend zijn.
- Open je foto is je bewerkingsprogramma.
- Eenmaal geopend moeten we de afbeelding verkleinen naar het formaat waarop we willen printen. In Photoshop ga je naar het image menu en selecteer je ‘image size’ (image>image size). In ‘the gimp’ ga je op zoek naar ‘scale image’ in het image menu (image>scale image).
- In het volgende venster zal je het gewenste formaat kunnen definiëren. In Photoshop doe je dit bij ‘document size’. Daar kan je lengte en/of breedte (hou ze gekoppeld) bepalen. Er is ook een derde variabele, ppi of dpi (dots per inch). Om een mooi en scherp ogende print te bekomen (ik ga ervan uit dat de foto scherp is voordat je ermee aan de slag gaat), raad ik aan te kiezen voor 300. In ‘the gimp’ vind je ook lengte en breedte, maar de ppi variabele is opgesplitst in ‘x resolutie’ en ‘y resolutie’. Zet deze ook op 300 (hou ze gekoppeld). Zowel in Photoshop als in ‘the gimp’, kun je inches, cm, pixels, … selecteren als lengtematen.
- Select OK en je afbeelding zal worden verkleind. Het kan zijn dat je foto door het herschalen wat van zijn scherpte verliest. Ik verscherp dit meestal achteraf met het ‘unsharp mask’. Dit is echter geen noodzakelijke stap.
- Vervolgens open ik een nieuw document met het formaat van het papier dat ik voorhanden heb (vb.10×15). Daarvoor klik ik op ‘File – New’ en selecteer ik het gewenste formaat. Opnieuw kan je het formaat definiëren in pixels, inches, … of kan je één van de aangeboden voorbeelden kiezen. De meeste standaardformaten zijn al aanwezig.
- Dan kopieer en plak ik mijn verkleinde afbeelding in het nieuw gecreëerde bestand. De snelste manier is om naar je afbeelding te gaan en ‘ctrl+a’ gevolgd door ‘ctrl+c’ te drukken. En dan naar het nieuwe bestand te gaan en ‘ctrl+v’ te duwen. Je foto wordt nu op een nieuwe laag gekleefd, zodat je ze kan verplaatsen of zelfs draaien. Afhankelijk van hoe groot je de prints wil, kan je misschien meer dan één foto op je papier passen. Het resultaat is één of meer kleinere afbeeldingen op een witte achtergrond.
- Sla het bestand dan op als een jpg-bestand.
Je kan dit bestand zelf printen of zo doorsturen naar een professionele printservice. Je hoeft er enkel voor te zorgen dat het uiteindelijke bestand hetzelfde formaat heeft als het papier waarop je wil gaan printen, of als de formaten die aangeboden worden door de online dienst. Nadat je foto is geprint kun je gewoon wegsnijden wat teveel is.
